Don't Stand Still, July 2015
"Stephanie move!” someone screams. “Call 911!” the office manager yelled to her. Mary ran past her and out the door. Dennis stood near the door, speaking to the security guard. Someone close to her called for help on a cell phone. He had one hand on Stephanie's shoulder and the other held the phone. She heard him speaking. "Yes, he's breathing. There's a large amount of blood loss though. I'm not sure he can move.” And then he turned to Stephanie and said, "They're on their way. It will be OK."
As if the call changed everything, Stephanie walked out of the building, down the steps, to the cracked sidewalk and into the street. The crowd was all looking at her as she pushed through everyone with tears furiously falling. She fell down to her knees. Then put her head on top of his chest. “Please don’t go. Please open your eyes. Squeeze my hand. Something! I’m sorry. This is my fault.” She intertwined his fingers with hers, saying a prayer that he would be alright.
